It’s Monday Morning, around 10:00. I’m in my office doing the usual early work-week things when a vendor stops by with an invoice to be paid.
"Good morning! Let me grab the checkbook for you," I say.
"You look tired," he replies.
Now how exactly should a person take this? For once I actually got a full night’s sleep and woke up before my alarm. I’m pretty perky for a Monday, and I don’t have the usual mid-week scowl painted on my face yet, so I’m at a loss.
"Thank you." I decided to say back, with just a hint of sarcasm.
I mean, was that meant to be a compliment? He shoves his foot further into his mouth by saying, ”at least I didn’t say ‘You look like Hell.’”
No. At least you didn’t say that.
There was a long lingering pause, so I ended our conversation from Awkwardonia by bluntly telling him, “this is just how my face looks,” and handing him the signed check.
He didn’t even say good-bye on the way out.
